Welcome to the elektronix section, where I list good gear to buy. As you can see most of the links here are for Amazon.co.uk, as they're a good affiliate of mine, and you can get some stonking deals. I have made different sections - so browse like you'd do in a store :D
Netgear DG834GT 108Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router with 4-port 10/100 switch (£67)
This is the fastest wireless speed you can get today - 108mbit, so combine that with Netgear's simple design, setup and usability and you have a nifty router. With firewall built in, you're going to be safer than with just a software firewall. 4 ports too, so if you fancy a game with your mates there's no need for the RJ45 :) I have heard you need to update the firmware for PIPEX to support it, but thats no biggie :)
Netgear WG511T 108 Mbps Wireless PC Card (£33)
This is the fastest wireless speed you can get today - 108mbit, and a lot of notebooks only have 54mbit support, so if you want to make the most of that Super-G network you're going to need this gismo. It's a PCMICA card but as it's Netgear you know it's going to work smoothly with the router! Excellent buy, specially if you like making big file transfers between PCs
Belkin Bluetooth Access Point with USB Print Server (£86)
So, you want to print from more than one PC? No problemo, get this fella in and you're laughing (well, you know what I mean don't you?) - and an added plus is that it can handle bluetooth devices, so if you want to synch your phone, but you don't have bluetooth, put it next to the print server and away you go! Neat! Also if you have a bluetooth printer (ooh look at you) than this will work with this :-)
Netgear WG111T 108Mbps Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter (£33.50)
Got a desktop? Don't really want to open it up? Thats understandable... just get one of these babies and you're not going to have to know your PCI's from your AGP's. This will make good use of your Super G network. Though I hear these USB2 wireless access points are not as good as their PCI brothers, so be warned, this is a last resort!
Netgear WG311T 108 Mbps Wireless PCI Adapter (£35)
Got a desktop and know your stuff? Get this fella in, it's a PCI card which slots in easy and gives you 108mbits of wireless networking access.... very handy with that router I recomended. Quick and easy to install too, but make sure you install the drivers first, then fit the card as instructed by Netgear, or that job will take more than 5mins :(
Maxtor Combo Personal Storage One Touch II, 300GB, 16MB cache, 7200 RPM USB2 Firewire Connection (£145)
So now you're on the net, got your network running you really should back up your hard work; and why not do it on one of these Maxtors? They're handy, spacious with 300GB of space (enough for any music/video/photo fan, portable, easy to connect to USB and firewire making them very universal to use - so get your paws on these and don't forget to backup regularly!
Buffalo HD-H300LAN-1 Network Storage centre 300gb (£270)
Don't fancy moving that hard disk every 2 minutes? Can't blame ya, so get one of these in, a NAS (Network Added Storage, not Nasir Jones (Nas the rapper)) can be very handy to back up all the PCs on your network, and to share music with the PCs and media devices in your home
Verbatim DVD+R (8x) 25 Pack Spindle (£9)
Made a wicked movie? Why not share it with your friends? Put it on one of these and you'll be able to watch it on a DVD player. Also handy for backing up data and music. Make sure your drive supports + before purchasing though...
Verbatim DVD-R (8x) 25 Pack Spindle (£10)
Made a wicked movie? Why not share it with your friends? Put it on one of these and you'll be able to watch it on a DVD player. Also handy for backing up data and music. Make sure your drive supports - before purchasing though...
TDK - 100 x CD-R 700 MB ( 80min ) 52x - spindle - storage media (£15)
CD-Rs are always handy to have, and 100 means you won't be running out in any hurry at all - so backup your data, music, pictures and important files, you have no more excuses! These TDKs are very good quality, and work well in my fussy CD drive, and it's best to get more expensive CD-Rs as your data is safer on better quality CD-Rs.
Verbatim CDRW-80 (8x-12xx) 5pk Slim Jewel Case - hi-speed coloured (£4)
CD-RWs are always handy to have, they act like a big floppy disk, and can be erased when you feel the need to get rid of your data and start using it again. Very handy for carrying big files from work back home etc. Also good to test out your home made movie's quality on VCD or SVCD.
V-Stream Xpert DTV-DVB-T USB 2.0 Digital TV Terrestrial with Remote Control (£58)
Never miss a show again! Record it using this gismo... and if it's on freeview, no worries, this thing can handle it. Handy USB box which you can take with you wherever you go, turns your laptop into a portable TV too, which can be handy if you have limited space in university, or just prefer the LCD on there. Well worth having :)
Creative I-Trigue 3400 2.1 Speakers - Silver and Black (£53)
If you like your music, you're going to like this system. Yes, I know, it's 2.1; but still the sound is pretty good for their price. If you watch DVD then look at the other 5.1/7.1 recomendation.
Creative Labs Gigaworks S750 7.1 THX Speakers (£248)
Now these are the business: 7.1 speaker system for watching THX quality DVDs and great for gaming and music listening. Yep, thats a high price tag, I agree with you, but when you've got them on and setup correctly you'll really benefit from those extra speakers.... definately a cool buy.... maybe one day I'll have a set........ who knows :P
Harman Multimedia Soundsticks II (£98)
I've actually heard these in action when I was in town the other week, and they were on a Mini Mac running iTunes 5, and the sound was amazing, I looked up to see what was producing the sound, and yep, it was these cool Harman Kardon speakers, still the market leader if you ask me. Beautiful design too, would look superb in front of my PC :)
Logitech Quickcam Pro 4000 Webcam (£40)
For those of you who enjoy webcams, this will rock; for me, not really into them. But if you have far away relitives you want to see as you talk to them then this is the business - it's good a good quality camera and resolution, so you shouldn't be disapointed!
Jabra BT250v Bluetooth Headset (£38)
If you like using Skype, then you're going to need one of these headsets - bluetooth so you don't have to be at the PC to deal with the calls (you can be 100m away), this is a great addition to a VoIP setup... oh and when you're in the car or out and about it'll work with your mobile phone, so it's got two very useful uses
more to come soon :)
